Story of Phoenix

A city that rises, again and again.

Phoenix takes its name from the oldest symbol San Francisco has, a mark of reinvention carried on the city’s flag and seal since the nineteenth century.

1850s

Fires swept the young city. From the ashes of its first great disaster, San Francisco rebuilt itself and took the phoenix as its emblem.

On the seal

The phoenix has stood on San Francisco’s flag and official seal ever since, a quiet reminder that the city’s identity was forged in renewal.

1906

Earthquake and fire tested that identity again. The city rose once more, carrying the symbol forward into a new century.

Today

San Francisco shapes the technologies defining the decades ahead. The spirit of the phoenix, to imagine, rebuild and rise, points to what the city could create next.

The project takes its name from that lineage: a proposed place where the city’s future is made, and made public.

“When I returned to the Bay Area, I imagined a place where artists and engineers could create together, where technology becomes culture. Phoenix is my vision for the place I wished existed.”

The vision grew from Ilona’s work as a designer, artist and entrepreneur across fashion, art and technology, and from the conviction that the most meaningful innovation happens when disciplines share a room.
